Nigerian Bar Association Expresses Concern Over Judiciary's Role in Political Party Disputes Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has voiced significant concern regarding the judiciary's involvement in the internal crises of political parties, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach. According to Vanguard, the NBA characterized this involvement as "disturbing" and cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against any form of partisanship. This stance was articulated by NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, during a valedictory court session held in honor of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun of the Supreme Court.

President Maikyau emphasized that the judiciary's role is to interpret the law and resolve disputes, not to manage political parties. He highlighted that the NBA views the judiciary's increasing entanglement in political party affairs as undermining the integrity and independence of the courts. The NBA's statement reflects a broader apprehension about the potential for judicial decisions to be perceived as politically motivated, thereby eroding public trust in the justice system.

The NBA President further advised INEC to maintain strict neutrality and adhere to its constitutional mandate as an impartial umpire.
